How rent charges work
Where the number on a resident's ledger comes from, and what posts it.
For landlordsRent posts to a resident's ledger on the schedule their lease sets. Anything else recurring — pet rent, parking, storage, a utility allocation — posts alongside it, so the resident gets one statement rather than four.
The balance is always charges minus payments. There is no second system keeping a different total; what you see and what the resident sees are the same rows.
Adding a one-off charge
From the rent ledger, add an entry against the unit with a description the resident will understand. “Fine — parking” is a description. “Adj 4471” is not, and it will generate a phone call.
Correcting a mistake
Void it. Voiding writes a reversing entry and leaves the original struck through and visible. Nothing is deleted, because the month you have to explain later is always the month somebody deleted something.
